2011 Triangle Brewing Co. in Review

Well as 2011 comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on all the activities that Triangle Brewing Co. participated in. Kind of a year end summary! Wow, it doesn’t seem like January 2011 was that long ago. In 2011, TBC made a conscious effort to adjust our festival schedule; we attended as many festivals as previously, but wanted to make sure that all of them benefited a non profit organization. Eric Diehl joined our staff in March of 2011 and has done a great job replacing Luke Studer (who is now brewing at Bull City Burger & Brewery). This 2011 was the first winter of canning our Belgian Style Golden and White Ales. Sales continue to increase for both as we entered Grocery Stores. We also started contract canning for Carolina Brewery, getting them their Sky Blue Golden and Flagship IPA into cans, which has led to a great collaboration between breweries. The NC Brewer’s Guild continues to grow and prosper with the addition of new breweries and the support of the entire NC public and brewing community.

We celebrated a few receptions at the Brewery again this year! Our 4th Anniversary Pub Crawl was also a very exciting event, especially with the introduction and addition of The Roxy. Summer was hot, but didn’t keep people away from the crawl or our tours. Fall came and went with the celebration of our 5th Annual Black Friday Cask Festival. We had 18 casks from 18 different NC Breweries. DJ Ras J rocked the house and was a good time had by all. Todd Isbell from Liberty Steakhouse and Brewery took home the trophy for the Brewer’s Choice Award for his cask of Kitchen Sink IPA!

Currently, Triangle is working on label approval for our IPA can. It recently passed TTB approval and will hopefully be ready for filling in Jan. 2012. No I don’t have a more exact date than that! Triangle Brewing Co. continues to grow and looks to double our production in 2012. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of all of you. With this plan, we have added our 4th employee, Kit Verbal! He has just started and appears to be a great addition to our staff, but will continue to require lots of hazing before he catches a break!

Wet Hop IPA Cask 10/6

Mitch's Bar & Grille has just opened on Ninth Street (where Dogstar Tattoo use to be), so in celebration Triangle Brewing Co. will be tapping a cask of our Wet Hopped IPA at 5:30 on Thus. 10/6. The Wet Hops in this beer where grown locally by Farmer Needham and were added in the mash and continuously throughout the boil. Wet hops are hops that are picked fresh the day prior to our using, sometimes referred to as a harvest ale. Cheers and hope to see you.

This Thursday we are participating in a Beer & Bowling event at the AMF Lanes in Durham. Stop by for some cheap bowling and tasting brews. This coming Monday Pinhook in Durham is doing a local brew, local pint night featuring Triangle Brewing Co. $3.00 pints and an extra $1 to keep the glass! Good deal! Summer Review

OK, now that everyone has recovered from our 4th Anniversary Pub Crawl here is a little look back and look ahead to what's going on this summer. The Pub Crawl was a great event, Special Thank you's to Alivia's, West End Wine Bar, The Roxy, Devines, and James Joyce. The beers were flowing and da peoples were stumblin! Good Times!

Triangle does have a few events coming up on our calender. We have a beer dinner scheduled for Aug. 1 at Panzinella in Carrboro. I believe the start time is 6pm, more details to follow as it gets closer.

Currently in the fermentor is our Imperial Amber! I have dry hopped that bad boy on two separate occasions and it is almost ready. Keep your eyes and ears out for the release party, should be coming soon. Uncle Needham reports that the Habaneros are growing very well and should be ready for harvest by the end of August. That puts a mid September release date (tentatively) for the Habanero Pale Ale. It will be released at the brewery first, so keep an eye on our calender of Hoppenings.

The White and Golden continue to do very well in the can, so we are currently working on the IPA can. The art work is almost completed, then off for approval and printing. Hopes are to have it release in early fall!

Pub Crawl July 9th

Ok folks, sorry about the delay on getting this information out. Our 2011 Pub Crawl is scheduled for Saturday July 9. We will be kicking off the event at Alivia's Durham Bistro. The Crawl kicks off at 5:00pm for our firsts featured beer at Alivia's. Quite a few of us will get to Alivia's early (4pm or so) so we have an opportunity to eat before we begin the debacle. We plan to leave Alivia's once we kick the featured keg and move on to the next venue. This will be around 6pm. I am not sure which location will be next, but we will be going to Alivia's, Devines, Casbah, West End Wine Bar, and Durham's newest spot "The Roxy"!! Early next week, I will have the official time schedule, so you can make plans with additional friends. All of the bars are a brief walk from each other, so park once and stagger! We plan to have live music at the final location and have a variety of our beers on. The only cost for you is whatever your bar tab is for the evening. The featured Triangle Beer at each location will be on special for the day. Try to bring some cash so we can speed up the check out and not drive all the bartenders crazy! Cheers and see you soon!!

This is our final event for American Craft Beer Week. 10 firkins of cask ale from Triangle Brewing Co., Natty Greene's, Top of the Hill, Roth Brewing, and Carolina Brewery. The line up consist of: Triangle Bourbon Aged Abbey, Triangle Stout, Triangle IPA dry hopped, Natty Greene's Golden- Mango, Natty's OTBrown with Rosemary and Mint, TOPO's Ram's Head IPA, TOPO's Frank PORTER Graham, Roth's Raleigh Red dry hopped, Carolina's Flagship IPA dry hopped, and Carolina's Bull Pen Pale dry hopped. $35 at the door. 2011 Hickory Hops and the Carolinas Championship of Beers

Threatened by morning rain and all-day winds, Hickory Hops, one of the South’s most popular beer festivals, culminated for some with the announcement of the big winners in the Carolinas Championship of Beers (CCB) competition. Over 2000 festivarians were in attendance in downtown Hickory, NC on Saturday to enjoy beer from 42 breweries and to applaud the four Best of Show winners.

The CCB, which just closed on its 6th rendition, starts with craft brewed beer. Hickory Hops participants are encouraged to send bottled beer in for judging. The beers, which totaled 286 beers from 39 breweries, were entered into specific categories, 133 in total, as determined by the brewers. On March 26, three weeks prior to Hickory Hops, fifty volunteers gathered at Olde Hickory Brewery to judge the unmarked beers for adherence to specific category characteristics. When the first round finished three hours later, 29 beers had been awarded gold medals. 55 received silver. An equal number of bronze winner were identified.

For CCB round two, a smaller group of certified judges convened to determine the best of the 29 golds. Called the Best of Show round, four beers – first, second, third places and honorable mention – were proclaimed the best of the best.

Greensboro’s Natty Green Brewing Company claimed “First Place – Best of Show” for brewer Sebastian Wolfrum and his brewing team’s Wood Aged Sour Ale. Brewer Ian Burnett was on hand to receive the grand prize, but Wolfrum credited brewer Scott Christoffel with creation of the barrel-aged sour beauty. Acidic, decidedly sour and full of flavor, this traditional style beer is an acquired taste for sure but a delicacy for many beer aficionados. The Natty Greene’s company is comprised of brewpubs in Greensboro and Raleigh as well as a production brewery near the Greensboro Coliseum. Natty’s scored a second gold in the first round with Black Powder Imperial Stout.

“Second Place – Best of Show” was awarded to Olde Hickory Brewery. Head brewer Steven Lyerly’s Irish Walker impressed judges in both CCB rounds with its rich, malty body and filling texture. Co-owner Lyerly and business partner Jason Yates are part of the local team that makes Hickory Hops and the CCB competition happen each year. Olde Hickory also garnered a double-pair – two silvers and two bronze medals - in first round competition

Farmville, NC’s Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery owner/brewer Paul Philippon was on hand to receive the “Third Place” plaque for his sultry, delicious Duck-Rabbit Barleywine. Last years Best of Show winner, Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout, also took gold in the earlier round.

For the first time ever, the Best of Show judges chose to recognize an Honorable Mention designee. Winston-Salem’s Foothills Brewing claimed that honor for head brewer Jamie Bartholomaus’ extremely popular Barrel-Aged Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout. Released every February to a long line of eager buyers, the barrel-conditioned version also scored gold at the 2010 Great American Beer Festival.

Triangle Brewing Company had another stellar showing both in the Medals and being the first brewery to provide all casks for the festival. Triangle won a silver medals for their Habanero Pale Ale and Belgian Style Lambic, and a bronze medal for their Belgian Style Golden Ale.

Proceeds from this year’s CCB, totaling over $1500, will be donated to the North Carolina Brewers Guild for use promoting the State’s 45-ish breweries. Hickory Hops will also make a substantial donation to the Guild.

That's right folks, it's that time of the year! Beer, basketball, and allergies.... these are a few of my favorite things, well all except allergies. We have six packs available in quite a few more stores. Most Harris Teeters in Durham and Orange Co., Total Wine has been approved, but not sure the exact roll out date, and Kroger is in the works. We have also started getting cans out to some of our local restaurants and bars, so keep your eyes out! Currently, they are at Toast, Broad Street, Blue Corn, Dain's, Spanky's and a few others.

There is a tour this Saturday, but if you need beer for the games on Thursday or Friday, please call us asap to setup a mutually time convenient time on Weds, Thurs, or Friday. Please don't wait until the last minute!!!

We have several recent releases over the past few weeks. Our Stout is still pouring, as well as the long anticipated release of our Habanero Pale Ale and Bourbon Aged Abbey Dubbel. All are available on draft and in growlers.

Triangle Brewing Co. would also like to welcome our newest employee; Eric! He has officially started and has jumped in with both feet. Come by the tour on Saturday and give him an ear full of unsolicited advice. Cheers.

The Festivals are Starting!!

That's right folks, the first festival of the year is upon us! This coming Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 3-7 the Asheville Winter Warmer Festival will be kicking off the new year. This is a great event, small, intimate, with great beer and food. I get a little tired of the Blue Grass Music, but when in Rome!!! Luke and I will be heading up there on Friday with a couple of casks. If you are in town, stop by the Civic Center and have a few beers with us. We will also be bringing several cases of our Belgian Style Golden and White up to Bruisen Ales and Weinhaus in Asheville.

Yes, we will still be having our Saturday Tour, so if you are in town come on by at 1:00. Cheers.

This is the first week of 2011 and we are already off and running strong! So much to be thankful for last year and things to look forward to. Brewery tours will start again this Saturday Jan. 8 and will be pretty much every Saturday (unless) a festival is scheduled that weekend. This Saturday Jan. 8 we will also be celebrating Rick's birthday at the Casbah on Main Street in Durham. There will be 3 bands, including Jay Kutchma, The Dry Heathens and The Beast. Triangle Beers should be on special that night as well as Only Burger in the parking lot. The event starts at 9pm with music starting around 9:30pm. Come join the Triangle crew and laugh at Rick doing stupid stuff!!! (Cause ya know that will happen as the night goes on).

Our first festival of the new year is set for Jan. 22 in Asheville (Winter Warmer). This is always a fun event and I believe it will be held at the Civic Center this year. Check online for tickets. Stay tuned, cause there is more to come! Cheers.

Hey all, we will not be doing our regular tour on Dec. 18. Instead it will be an OPEN HOUSE with mini tours from Rick, Andy & Luke. We will be having FREE live music from PIPE,HOG, and other Durham Bands and will be running a cash bar. The purpose of this event is a fundraiser for some good friends of the brewery, Cameron and Berit All proceeds will be donated to them that day! Gates open at 12:30 and close at 4:30pm. Food vendors will be here selling and donating partial proceeds to Cam & Berit!! We have arranged for heaters for the day (Just in case), but the weather is predicting 50F weather. The casks are starting to roll in and tickets are moving fast. Online discounted tickets end on Thursday Nov. 25. The event starts at 3pm and ends at 8pm. Food vendors are Hillsborough BBQ and Alivia's. Tickets are $40 at the door, unless you have a NC Brewer's Guild Enthusiast Membership Card then only $20. You can buy the membership at the door.

Andy, Luke and I have finished installing our canning line. It's taken some time and resulted in a few challenges. Our goal is to have cans out into stores this coming week. You will be able to find the cans available in Durham and Orange County asap, with Wake County coming in the near future.

Our cans have been printed!! On Thursday, Andy and I drove up to Reidsville, NC to the Ball Corp plant where they knocked out approximately 200,000 cans of our Belgian Golden and White Ale. The cans ship to Durham on Tuesday and our canning line should be here next week (hopefully). Folks should start seeing our cans in stores by mid August! It's hard to fathom that July is almost a memory (okay, a few surviving brain cells). We are officially 3 days away from our cans being printed and our canning line shipping. Do to unforeseen delays on the canning line, Luke ended up getting a weeks vacation, leaving us here to sweat! There is a lot of things coming in the near future for TBC; CANS, CANS, CANS, plus the Imperial Amber has been dry hopped and will be ready in approx. a week. Before too much longer, we will be brewing the Abbey to get it ready for early fall. Where does the time go? Every time I turn around it seems like I need to drop another cask at Alivia's or there is an event to go pour at. I am sure August will fly by and September is already filling up with the Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, Brewgrass, and our Can Release Party on Sept. 25. Two weeks later is the Durham World Beer Festival (Oct. 9). ...Not sure where I am going with this accept that it's hot and we be busy. Cheers.

Still Recovering from Turning 3

A week has past and we are still adjusting to turning 3. I chose to take the week off from drinking in an effort to recover from the Pub Crawl!! It was a great turn out, great friends, music, and beer, who could ask for more!! The canning line is on it's way and should be fully operational by early August. Cans are being printed in Reidsville, NC and should be at the brewery before August. In mid August, you should be seeing the cans in all local stores in Durham and Orange Co, with Wake Co. coming in the near future. We have scheduled a Can Release Party on Sept. 25 at the brewery with live music from The Beast & Pipe, with another band TBD (still waiting for confirmation). Food vendors will be cooking up a storm and cans will be a flyin when Pipe takes the stage!! Other things... the Imperial Amber is in the fermenter and will be available in the next couple weeks, so keep your eyes and ears out for our release events. Once we get the cans out and stable with the demand, I am looking fwd to brewing some other beers. The Habaneros will be ready in late August and the Abbey will be brewed soon, but not release until the end of Sept./ early Oct. Thanks for all your support! cheers.

They will be running a limited food menu to help expedite the process for any early diners that need a good base before we get started. The menu will consist of Gaelic Burger, Portobello Sandwich, Bangers & Mash, Fish & Chips, and Nora Barnacle's Ribs. If you plan to eat there, please arrive with a reasonable amount of time for the kitchen to get the food out before we move on to the next location. Asheville, North Carolina is BeerCity USA 2010. While Portland, Oregon organized a healthy challenge against the western North Carolina city of Asheville, in the end the relentless craft beer enthusiasm for Asheville won out. Enjoy the hundreds of comments on the original poll site.

There’s no doubt about Portland, Oregon. Anyone who has enjoyed beer in Portland will agree, it’s a craft beer experience and highlight of the American beer experience. Asheville has 6 breweries who enjoy terrific support from their local community. Beers experienced from breweries in both cities, I can attest to, are worth the journey to these American beer Meccas. In fact beer enjoyed in most American cities is worth the journey. Beer drinkers are on notice: You can leave home now – better beer awaits.

What about the 1,500+ other craft brewers and the cities, towns and villages they call “local?” The growth in enthusiasm and support for celebrating American Craft Beer Week last week is a clear indication that there are many BeerCity USAs worth visiting. Savoring the American beer landscape has turned out to be a fun journey for 90 million American beer drinkers. American Craft Beer Week coincided with BeerCity USA poll and ended with an outpouring of votes for the relatively smaller city of Asheville, North Carolina. 1. What do you believe are the most important issues facing the Superior Court? What are your top priorities or issues of concern for the coming term?

The most important issues are on the criminal side, especially the continuing congestion and delays in getting criminal cases to trial and ensuring fairness in discovery. As to the first issue, in a time of scarce resources the courts should not be idle, yet that often happens when scheduled trials get continued and the calendar breaks down. I would like to work with district attorneys and defense counsel to stay busy trying cases. One way to do this would be to have month long or two week calendars of minor cases so that they could be called for trial when major cases don't wind up being tried.

Simply being available before court and on Fridays would also be important to keeping things moving, and I am willing to come in as early as necessary so that court can get off to a prompt start. This is not an empty promise, as I am often in my office as early as 7 AM.

The second issue is ensuring fairness in discovery. As the Gell and Duke lacrosse cases show, keeping discovery open is extremely important. As a long-time defense attorney I understand the obstacles to a fair exchange of information. Defendants should not have to make decisions about pleas when there is significant unknown information that could have affected their decision, especially when the judge lets that information in at trial.

2. What qualifies you to serve?

Having been engaged in active trial practice in Durham since 1986, I am the only candidate (except perhaps for Judge Hardin) who has both extensive and continuous experience in both civil and criminal Superior Court for almost 25 years. I have personally tried approximately 100 cases, both criminal and civil, before juries, plus many hundreds of non-jury matters. I've appeared in courts all over the state, from Bertie County down east to Henderson County beyond Asheville.

Talking to sitting judges has made it clear to me that in addition to presiding over trials, a Superior Court Judge has a significant academic function in researching and interpreting law. I also have extensive experience in this area, starting as a staff attorney for the North Carolina Court of Appeals where researching and writing North Carolina law was all I did for three years. In my current practice I have researched and written approximately 75 appellate briefs, both civil and criminal, as well as many other memoranda and documents that required legal research.

Judges typically cannot create their own case load; rather, they must rule on the cases that come to them and must therefore be prepared to handle a wide variety of cases. My experience has prepared me well to handle such variety. For nearly 25 years I have had a general practice and handled all sorts of civil and criminal matters, including traffic tickets, family law cases (including child support and custody), wills, workers compensation, personal injury and Social Security cases, and real estate closings. I believe that this wide range of experience gives me a solid grasp of the many areas a judge has to deal with, the ability to respond efficiently to new matters, and a good understanding of what the practical effects of my judging will be on the lawyers and clients who will appear before me.

In addition to my legal experience, I have already been serving the Durham community as president of the Duke Park Neighborhood Association for the past four years, Sunday School teacher for over ten years, and ministry leader at Durham Quaker meeting. My wife and I have been counseling engaged couples for Duke Catholic Student Center and Immaculate Conception Church for almost two decades. I am a 15 gallon blood donor and served my country in the United States Army from 1974 to 1976. I have been a devoted husband to my wife of almost 25 years and a devoted father to our two children. It would be an honor to continue to serve my community as judge.

3. How do you define yourself politically? How does that impact your judicial approach?

I am a progressive Democrat. I believethat we can and should build a fairer and more just society through community effort. I have been working for the party for years, and am now a precinct chair. I campaigned for Obama; during the campaign I often brought voter registration forms to court and registered new voters at the courthouse, as well as canvassing in Durham neighborhoods.

But a judge is not a legislator or a politician. As a judge I would apply the law fairly and impartially to all who come before me.

4. FOR INCUMBENTS: What have been your most important decisions in your current capacity? FOR CHALLENGERS: What decisions has the incumbent made that you most disagree with?

The only incumbent is Jim Hardin. I have found him to be a smart and fair judge and have not been able to identify a decision I have been personally involved in that I felt was improper. I did not like his decision in State Employees Association of North Carolina, Inc. v. North Carolina Department of State Treasurer, (see COA08-1326, Court of Appeals of North Carolina, November 3, 2009). In that case, the SEANC sought public disclosure of information about what they claimed was risky investment of State pension funds. The State had not produced reports and emails requested by the SEANC and Judge Hardin declined to allow them to look at the documents in chambers and threw the case out. It was, however, a close call and the Court of Appeals affirmed the dismissal.

4. What do you feel was the U.S. Supreme Court's most important recent decision? Did you agree with the majority?

Clearly this is the Citizens United v. FEC case which effectively removed limits on corporate political spending and will undoubtedly have an enormous impact on public life in the United States. I disagree with the majority, which based its decision on the premise that corporations are "persons" with First Amendment rights. Corporations are persons in fiction only, existing by virtue of law, and are subject to comprehensive regulations. I think it is not unjust to also regulate their speech, especially where it is likely to drown out the free speech rights of individuals, which are what the First Amendment was designed to protect.

6. Do you feel that North Carolina's current system of judicial elections serves the state well? Are there other forms of selecting judges you feel would function better or worse than the current one?

The current system came into being in the early 1900s as a reform of a corrupt system. Although electing Superior Court judges out of their home districts as opposed to statewide was a huge improvement in voter awareness, it is true that the system has its imperfections. But when the governor has unrestricted appointment power he or she sometimes chooses political cronies, so straight appointment has its imperfections as well. I would favor a hybrid system, where candidates would have to be screened by the State Bar or some other professional group before they could run, with perhaps some additional qualifications to those currently required by statute -- just being a lawyer in good standing -- such as years of service or number of trials.

7. Have you ever pled guilty or no contest to any criminal charge other than a minor traffic offense? Please explain.

No.

8. Identify and explain one principled stand you would be willing to take if elected that you suspect might cost you some popularity points with voters. I am concerned about long mandatory prison terms for repeat offenders, especially drug addicts. A client of mine had a crumb of cocaine in his pocket (automatically a felony) and because of prior drug convictions he wound up getting eight years in prison for being an habitual felon. I would be willing to consider setting such a sentence aside as cruel and unusual and substituting a regular felony sentence.

9. What specifically about your qualifications do you think will enable you to improve the administration of justice in Criminal Superior Court?

As I said in my answers above, first and foremost among my qualifications is my continuous and extensive experience in Durham's criminal courts for almost 25 years. My intimate knowledge of the court system, active involvement in the community, and willingness to work hard mean I will hit the ground running and running hard. My religious faith and practice will keep me grounded and aware that justice and mercy must go together. Quakerism is about listening carefully and respecting the divine in all people; that is what a judge is supposed to do. And the Quaker business model is a "good product at a fair price" and I intend to deliver that and more to the citizens of Durham if they elect me.

Hickory Hops 2010

Triangle Brewing Company is extremely excited to announce that we have ordered our fully automated canning line. It will arrive this summer around the beginning of July and we will be rolling out our Belgian-Style Golden and Belgian-Style White in 12oz cans.

Why cans you ask?? (You must not have been at any of our tours lately!) A major impetus behind the recent microcanning trend is a change in canning technology, which for decades was geared toward large producers. The landscape changed, however, in 2001 when Canadian company Cask Brewing Systems began offering an automated canning line for small brewers.

Like screw tops on fine wine bottles, cans are often associated with a low-grade product. But as with wine, those associations are more myth than reality. In fact, the can is arguably better for the beer inside, which is fragile and easily damaged by exposure to heat, oxygen, and light. Dark brown glass bottles help with the light issue (and do a much better job than clear or green glass—take note, Corona and Heineken fans), but a can seals the deal more completely. That skunky association you have with canned beer? Most likely the package is not to blame. We also live in a destination that allows one to travel to the mountains and ocean all within a few hours drive. Cans are allowed at almost any venue and are perfect for the drinker on the go! We believe the canning of our beer will keep with the principles and ideals of what makes Triangle Brewing Co. Also, OUR cans are made just North of Greensboro, NC. The Pub Crawl is coming, the Pub Crawl is coming! What a historically relevant and inspiring ring. Every July, Triangle Brewing Company celebrates our conception (or momentary lapse of reason) with our annual downtown Durham Pub Crawl. What is a Pub Crawl you ask? Good questions, I like that you are following along. A Pub Crawl is for better or worse, a party on the move. We begin the event at one location; finish a special keg that is pouring at the venue before relocating to the next destination and repeating the act (with a different beer of ours). We typically have 4-5 stops on our crawl, so you get an insiders look at some of our most prominent downtown locations. Sometimes, there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, sometimes there is not! No matter what, it will be and always is a very good time that will keep your friends reminiscing throughout the year while they anxiously anticipate the next crawl. Our anniversary crawl is typically the weekend after the 4th.

This Years Pub Crawl (Stumble Mania III) is set for July 10! The time is TBA! (Check back for that!)

In addition to our annual Pub Crawl, we at Triangle Brewing Co. have noticed that people show up with the best intentions of finishing, but often fail miserably due to being extremely out of shape. So this year we thought we would hold our own little “Mini Training Camp” or “Spring Training”, so to speak. With that said, we will be holding 3 events at the brewery leading up to the crawl. The official crawl date has been named “StumbleMania”, with the following events being Saturday Night Main Event 1, 2, and 3. For the Saturday Night Main Events, the gates will open at 6pm with a training session from 6:15-7pm and live music starting at 7pm.

• April 10: 6-10 (Saturday) w/ Live Music: 7pm show: Echo Nova (fresh off the Twilight circuit) and 8:30 show: The Dry Heathen’s (Durham's ultimate Punk Anthem Kiss Arse Band), Food Vendors: Alivia's Grill To Go, and Training Session 1

• May 15: 6-10 (Saturday) w/ Live Music: 7pm show: Rat Jackson (TBC Favorites and "Beer Y'All" cast and 8:30 show: Pneortics (Who will be kickin it for MImi's Birthday), Food Vendors: Only Burger Truck, and Training Session 2

• June 12: 6-10 (Saturday) w/ Live Music: 7pm show: “Birds & Arrows” from Durham’s 507 Knox Records and 8:30 show: “The Mug’s” featuring Jon Connely from Carolina Brewery, Food Vendors: Only Burger Truck, and Training Session 3

These events are BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair)! To participate all you need to do is show up at 6:00pm and as a wise man at CBC said, have a “liver and dream”. These shows are all ages. Training Sessions are for 21 years and older. Details of each Training Session are highly confidential and will not be released until the day of the session. If you want to know in advance, I could tell ya, but then I’d have to kill ya! Cheers.

of February at least! Triangle Brewing Company is actually in an uncomfortable state of flux and growth. With Spring and Summer coming, we are finding that last years outfits are fitting a little snug and some not at all. Looks like we need to get a new wardrobe that will allow us continue to grow. We are currently shopping around and looking for sales and coupons (needed in this economy). I continue to keep my eyes out for Buy One, Get One Free deals, but there have been none to my dismay. Oh well, gotta keep looking. March and April should be exciting months at TBC. We have some events already scheduled and are in the process of booking a few more. Imperial Amber Release Party 3/2

Calling all hopheads; TBC will be releasing our Imperial Amber, which is the founding member of our Rufus Reserve Series. The beer will start flowing at 5pm at the brewery on Tuesday March 2. The IA will be available in pints and growlers for purchase. This Amber measures in at a hefty 8.2% and has been specially dry hopped twice to balance out the malt backbone. Hope to see you here. Wow, it is Feb. and the weather only seems to be getting worse. Don't get me wrong, I love cold weather for hanging out in a nice warm pub and drinking Stout and telling lies. But working in this weather has to go!! I was pleased to see that the cold weather and flurries did not deter our faithful and/or newbies from coming to our Saturday Tour. Great crowd and Luke's getting a little funnier with his tour. I was especially pleased to find out that we add the alcohol to our beer right after adding the color!! Funny, but true in an overly bastardized sort of a way. I was also excited to head over to Alivia's after the tour to show of our IPA on the beer engine, but to my dismay (and joy) it was already kicked. No worries folks, we will be tapping a cask of our "Best of Both Worlds" Stout on Thurs. at 5:30. (Yes, this is our Stout with coffee, chocolate and raspberries in it.) Andy, Luke and I will most definitely be stopping in for a pint, so come by and join us.

So what is on the agenda for the rest of the month: Gotta go to an industry event tomorrow at the Washington Duke. Business attire is required so I planned on wearing my birthday suit, but the wife said "NO". We've got tours every Saturday and casks tapping at Alivia's every Thursday. Our next beer to come out will be our Imperial Amber, which is currently in the fermenters. I am hoping to release it by the beginning of March or in time for March Madness at the latest. It will be draft only (and in cask), and available in growlers at the brewery. Sorry no bottles this year! Ok, enough for now! More updates to come in the near future. Cheers and go "SAINTS". Beer Engine @ Alivia's 2/4

This Thursday, Feb. 4 Triangle Brewing Co. will be participating in the unveiling of Durham's first operational Beer Engine. We are positive that it is functional, cause Andy and I spent the better part of the day today installing it. Yes, it was a pain in the arse, but nothing is too much for our beer. The plan is to tap weekly casks of TBC everything Thursday and run it thru the weekend (or until it goes dry). The first cask that will be tapped is our IPA. So come enjoy beer at its finest. The event is also a fundraiser for a young man with autism, who will be receiving a special bike. The cask tapping will occur at 5:30pm, so swing by for a pint to two. We will also, be pouring at cask of our Best of Both Worlds Stout. Cheers and see you Thursday.

Hey everyone, I am only posting this to be responsible (how unlike Andy & Rick J/K). We will monitor the weather overnight and post tomorrow by 10am if we are having our tour. We fully intend to be here, cause weather people aren't very good (disclaimer: no disrespect if you are a weather person reading this). Whirlwind Week

This has been a crazy week already and will continue to go full steam ahead! I returned from Asheville on Sunday after pouring at the 3rd Annual Winter Warmer Festival. I'll I can say, is that if you missed it than shame on you. What a great time, wonderful beers and great food. While in town, I had a chance to stop by 2 of Asheville's newest breweries; Craggie and Lexington Ave. Brewery. Good times had by all.

Currently, I continue to try to recover from the food coma from last nights Beer Dinner at Alivia's! Alivia's really out did themselves with the cuisine. Hard to say what my favorite was, but very fond of Baby Portabella Mushrooms, stuffed with Boursian Cheese and our Habanero Pale Ale. There is talk that a lot of these items may make the new menu. So if you haven't been to Alivia's to eat in awhile, give it another shot. Lots of changes and all for the good.

This Thursday, we will have 2 casks at Broad Street tapping at 6:00 with live music later in the evening from The Dry Heathen's. Very cool, one cask will be our stout conditioned with coffee and seville oranges and the other our XPA dry hopped.

On Friday we will be pouring at the Trotter Building for a fundraiser for "Save our Arts". Lots of great bands and $4 pints for a great cause. The event kicks off at 6pm and ends at 12. Hope to see you there.

Events are starting to pile up and it is only the end of January. This coming Saturday, I will be in Asheville for their Winter Warmer Beer Festival while Luke and Andy run the tour in Durham. This is a fun little beer festival put on by Mark Lyons of the Asheville Brews Crews. Hopefully, there will not be snow or cold weather in the mountains. That's right folks, Triangle Brewing Company will be releasing our 2010 Winter Warmer on Jan. 2 Our 2010 Winter Warmer is our Habanero Pale Ale. This is a very exciting beer that promises to heat you up on a cold winter day. The Habaneros were grown locally from Farmer Needham's pepper patch. This Pale Ale come with an enjoyable citrus and peppery flavor that follows with hint of warmth on the pallet. This is not in your face heat, but just what the Doctor ordered!!! Our doors will open on the 2nd at 1:00pm. There will not be a tour. We will be selling pints of all our beer as well as growlers. Yes, there is a tour this Saturday with the gates opening at 1pm. I have been informed that there is also an event at the corner of Gilbert and Pearl later in the day. Parking may be a problem, depending on how busy we are. I would suggest parking on Mailard or inside our gate. World Beer Festival this Saturday

WBF in Durham at the Historic (nice word for old) Durham Park! As far as I know, tickets are still available. Unfortunately, we will once again have the awful white floor. So make sure you put sun screen under your chin so you don't get burnt! I'm only half kidding about that!!! Looks to be a great festival. I know Andy will be working the day shift from 12-4 and I'll be running our booth at night from 6-10. Hopefully, the rain will hold off so we won't have a mud pit. It looks like we will be pouring around 5-6 different drafts and perhaps a cask or two. You'll have to stop by our booth to find out what's available. Cheers and see you then.

TBC on Vacation

1/3 of Triangle Brewing Co. took a few days and headed to the beach. While at the beach, Abby, Chris and I took a tour of New South Brewing Co. Dave and Brock are great guys who make great beer. We enjoyed a wonderful American Pale Ale and got to see one of the safest grain rooms ever, (Weird SC laws!!). This room is better than a bomb shelter! Lucky for us, we will get to see them again soon, since they will be attending Brewgrass and Charlotte's Oktoberfest. Sorry WBF, New South will be at the Charlston Beer Festival that weekend. World Beer Ticket Sales

There are two four-hour sessions of the World Beer Festival, each ticketed separately. They offer both General Admission tickets and VIP tickets. General admission attendees are given a tasting glass for two-ounce pours, and a festival program with the admission fee. VIP ticket-holders receive a World Beer Festival commemorative glass, complimentary food and access to the VIP hospitality area, where selected beers are offered that are not otherwise available.
