Sam Adams Hop Share

For a couple of months now, we’ve all been facing the unprecedented hops shortage and it’s affected all craft brewers in various ways. The impact is even worse on the small craft brewers--openings delayed, recipes changed, astronomical hops prices being paid and brewers who couldn’t make beer.
So Boston Beer Company, the makers of Sam Adams looked at their hops supplies and decided they could share some of their hops with other craft brewers who are struggling to get hops this year. They offered 20,000 pounds at cost to brewers who need them. You must commend them, they were not looking to make money on this so they are selling them at their cost of $5.72 a pound plus $.75 a pound to cover shipping and handling. This is well below the 400% current mark up on hops. For those wondering, why do they get hops at that low price? Many large breweries had hop contracts in place prior to the shortage, which enables them to continue purchasing at a set price for the duration of the contract.
According to Boston Beer Company, they had over 400 requests from different breweries that equaled a total of over 100,000 lbs of hops. In order to be as fair as possible they held a lottery to allocate the hops to as many breweries as possible. Approximately, 100 different breweries were selected to receive these hops. Triangle Brewing Company was one of the breweries selected as were at least 6 other North Carolina Breweries/ Brewpubs. We could not be more grateful to Boston Beer Company for their generosity. So next time your out at the store or at your favorite pub, purchase a Sam Adams to thank them for helping your local breweries. Cheers.
